Germany began the idea of establishing kindergarten, or preschool transition before mandatory education. Education is important and mandatory especially primary and secondary education. Most children first attend Grundschule (Ground School) for 4 years from the age of 6 to 9. Then the high schools (known as Gymnasien) are sub-divided into two which is the Lower and Upper Secondary education with the lower secondary providing general basic knowledge that will prepare students for the upper secondary education where students can choose from any of the vast vocational training provided.
