La Liga matches have not seen many highest scoring games this season. Unlike La Liga, the English Premier League has seen two outrageous scorelines already. Manchester City put 8 goals past Watford some weeks back and Leicester City smashed Southampton for nine at the Saint Mary’s Stadium. Such scorelines have been seen in La Liga over the years but the highest scoring games in La Liga history are bizarre scorelines. So bizarre are these scorelines that you’d probably find your favorite team on the receiving end of a sound beating. We present to you the six highest scoring games in La Liga history.

ATHLETIC BILBAO 10-0 CELTA VIGO (1942)
Next on our list of La Liga matches with most goals is a round 15 tie between Athletic Bilbao and Celta Vigo. Athletic Bilbao are one of the most successful teams in La Liga with 8 La Liga titles and 24 Copa Del Rey wins. The Basque club has never been relegated since the inception of La Liga. So back to business, the first half of this game ended in a modest 3-0 scoreline with Telmo Zarra scoring a brace after Ortiz’s 30th-minute strike. Bilbao resumed the second half firing on all cylinders with Telmo Zarra scoring two more with Panizo (2), Viar (2) and Iriondo getting on the scoresheet. Sevilla defeated Real Oviedo by the same margin that same season and Athletic Bilbao beat Leida by the same margin nine seasons later. Bilbao and Sevilla’s victory were the fourth highest-scoring games in the 1941/1942 season.
BARCELONA 10-1 GIMNASTIC DE TARRAGONA (1949)
Here is the second game on our list of La Liga matches with most goals. It was round 2 of the 1949 La Liga season and Gimnastic or Nastic as they were called paid Barcelona a visit in Camp Nou. The first-half ended 4-0 with goals from Cesar Rodriguez, Canal, and a Navarro brace. The Catalan side continued the second half in a spectacular fashion scoring two goals in 13 second-half minutes. Bravo pulled one back for Nastic but it was nothing but a consolation as Barcelona scored four more times in 13 minutes to make the score 10-1. Navarro scored 5 times and Cesar Rodriguez scored a hat trick to write their name in the history of highest scoring games in La Liga history. Other games that have matched this result include Real Madrid-Las Palmas (1958/1959), Atletic Bilbao-Real Zaragoza (1951/1952), Deportivo La Coruna-Leida (1950/1951).
REAL MADRID 10-2 RAYO VALLECANO (2015)
This 12-goal match comes next our list of La Liga matches with most goals. Real Madrid had lost 3 of their last five fixtures before this contest and there was pressure on the big names and the gaffer, Rafa Benitez. Danilo put Real Madrid up 3 minutes into the game only for Rayo Vallecano to reply with two goals after 9 minutes scored by Amaya and Jozabed. It looked like disaster was looming at the Bernabeu until Rayo Vallecano’s Tito made a two-footed tackle on Toni Kroos which earned him a red card. Madrid made their one-man advantage count as Bale scored in the 25th minute to equalize for Madrid. Another Red card for Baena reduced them to 9-men and that is one situation you don’t want to be in playing against Real Madrid. Bale went on to score three more times adding to a Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace and a Karim Benzema hat-trick to complete the 10-2 rout.
SEVILLA 11-1 BARCELONA (1940)
The question you might want to ask is what team did Barcelona put up that got humiliated this way. Truly its had to see the great FC Barca on the receiving end of this kind of scoreline. It was the opening round of the 1940/1941 season and one of the highest scoring games in La Liga featured that day. It was ten goals without reply as Torrontegui and Campanal led Sevilla to a more than convincing victory against Josep Planas’ Barcelona in the highest-scoring La Liga matches.
REAL MADRID 11-2 ELCHE (1960)
Real Madrid are no doubt a powerhouse in both Spanish and European football. With most titles in the UEFA Champions League, this is one team you don’t want to mess up with. Round 21 of the 1959/1960 season witnessed one of the highest scoring La Liga matches in history. 32 minutes into the game and Real Madrid were 5-0 up thanks to a brace from Pepillo and a hat-trick from Ferenc Puskas. Santisteban put the ball into his own net to end the first half 5-1. It was all cannons out in the second half as Pepillo’ hat-trick plus strikes from Gento and Santisteban made the scoreline 10-1 in 17 second-half minutes. Cesar Rodriguez scored for Elche but Ferenc Puskas fourth of the day made sure the game ended 11-2.
ATHLETIC BILBAO 12-1 BARCELONA (1931)
Rounding off our list of highest scoring La Liga matches is another thrashing of FC Barcelona. Barcelona’s manager James Bellamy was definitely not expecting this. It was the 10th round of the season. The first half ended 6-1 with Bata already registering a hat-trick. Bata scored four more in the second half while Iraragorri and co. also go in on the act to record one of the highest scoring La Liga matches.
