University of Florida Brief History

The Kingsbury Academy in Ocala was taken over by the state-funded East Florida Seminary in 1853. In the 1860s, the Seminary relocated to Gainesville, where it later merged with the state’s land-grant Florida Agricultural College, which was then located in Lake City.


In 1905, the college became a university and was moved to Gainesville as a result of the legislative action. The first class that was held was with 102 students on the present site on Sept. 26, 1906. In 1947, the university officially began to enrol women into the school.
