How to tell if a phone number is a scam

Most phone scams start with a missed call, a text or a voicemail designed to make you act quickly: a parcel fee, a bank "fraud alert", a family member in trouble, or a tax or immigration threat. The number shown on your screen proves very little, because scammers can spoof caller ID to show any number, including a real bank's.

What a number can tell you

  • The country and type of number. International numbers that look domestic are a classic trick. In North America, area codes such as 876 (Jamaica), 809 (Dominican Republic) and 473 (Grenada) are international calls billed at high rates.
  • "One ring" (wangiri) calls. A missed call from an unfamiliar international number is often bait to make you call back to a premium-rate line.
  • Reports from other people. If others have reported the same number, you will see their reports here.

What to do

  1. Do not call back an unknown international number.
  2. Never share one-time codes, card numbers or passwords on a call you did not start. Banks, couriers and tax offices do not ask for them.
  3. Hang up and call the organisation on the number printed on your card, bill or its official website.
  4. Report scam texts by forwarding them to 7726 (U.S. and UK), and report the number here to warn others.

Common questions

Can I find out who owns a number?

Not reliably. Carriers do not publish owner names, and paid "reverse lookup" sites often guess. Reports, the country and the number type are more useful signals.

Why does a scam call show my bank's real number?

Caller ID can be faked. Treat any unexpected call asking you to move money or share codes as a scam until you call the bank back yourself.
