Scammed? Here is what to do right now

Breathe. Many people get money back when they act in the first hours. Tell us how you paid and where you live, and we will build your step-by-step plan.

Do these in order

Includes Apple Pay and Google Pay, which run on your card.

  1. Right nowCall the number on the back of your card

Say "I want to report fraud and dispute a charge." Ask them to cancel the card and send a new one. Write down the time, the agent's name and the claim number.

  2. Right nowAsk for a chargeback

Card networks let banks reverse charges for goods never delivered, fake goods and fraud. Most banks allow disputes for around 120 days from the transaction; credit cards usually give the strongest protection.

  3. TodayTurn on transaction alerts

Scammers who have your card number often try again with small test charges.

  4. This weekSend a written dispute

Use the letter generator below and keep proof you sent it. In the US the Fair Credit Billing Act gives you 60 days from the statement date to dispute a credit card charge in writing. In the UK, Section 75 makes the card company jointly liable for credit card purchases from £100 to £30,000.

  5. TodaySave every piece of evidence

Screenshots of chats, profiles, websites and receipts; phone numbers, emails, usernames, wallet addresses and transaction IDs. Do not delete the conversation.

  6. TodayWarn others

Report the website, number or wallet here so the next person who checks it is protected.

Watch out for "recovery" scammers. After a scam, fake lawyers, hackers and "fund recovery" agents contact victims promising to get money back for a fee. They are scammers too. Real help is free.
