Check who issued a site's padlock certificate, when it expires, which names it covers and whether the site forces HTTPS. Remember: scam sites have padlocks too.
A padlock only means "private", not "honest"
Most phishing sites now use free certificates. The padlock stops others reading your connection — it says nothing about who is on the other end. Check the domain, its age and its reputation too.
