Remote job and "task" scams: how to tell a real offer

Fake recruiters on WhatsApp and Telegram, "like videos for money" tasks and fake checks — how they work and how to check an offer.

Job scams now outnumber most other scam types. They target people who need work, and they look professional.

Task scams

You are paid small amounts to like videos, rate products or "optimise apps". Soon you must deposit your own money — usually crypto — to unlock bigger tasks. The earnings are fake and the deposits are gone.

Fake-check scams

A "recruiter" sends a check to buy equipment from their vendor. The check bounces days later and you owe the bank the full amount.

Five rules

  • Real employers never ask you to pay to start, buy equipment or deposit funds.
  • Real interviews happen by video or in person, not only on Telegram or WhatsApp.
  • Recruiters use the company's own email domain.
  • Find the job on the company's official careers page yourself.
  • Never share your bank login, SSN or ID photos before a written offer.
